Real-time Biosensor System for Biophysical Monitoring of Birds
نویسندگان
چکیده
Since a bird’s metabolic rates are finely tuned to their environments, research on avian systems plays an important role in investigation of ecology. Here, for the first time, we have developed a miniature needle-type enzyme sensor system suitable for continuous real-time amperometric in-vivo monitoring of uric acid levels in birds. In addition to extensive characterization of the sensor system, we also demonstrate autonomous operation of the system by collecting in-vivo extracellular uric acid measurements on a domestic chicken. The results confirm our needle-type sensor system’s potential for real-time monitoring of birds’ physiological state.

Lab-on-a-Bird: Biophysical Monitoring of Flying Birds
The metabolism of birds is finely tuned to their activities and environments, and thus research on avian systems can play an important role in understanding organismal responses to environmental changes. At present, however, the physiological monitoring of bird metabolism is limited by the inability to take real-time measurements of key metabolites during flight. In this study, we present an im...
متن کاملReal-time in vivo uric acid biosensor system for biophysical monitoring of birds.
Research on birds has long played an important role in ecological investigations, as birds are relatively easily observed, and their high metabolic rates and diurnal habits make them quite evidently responsive to changes in their environments. A mechanistic understanding of such avian responses requires a better understanding of how variation in physiological state conditions avian behavior and...
متن کاملFeasibility Study of Real-time and Automated Monitoring of Iranian Rivers using 50-kHz Fluvial Acoustic Tomography System
Acoustic Tomography (AT) technique is an innovative method for real-time river monitoring. In this study, not only the accuracy of flow velocity measurement using 50 kHz AT system which is appropriate for narrow rivers (most Iranian rivers) is evaluated, but also its performance is compared with 30 kHz one which is used in wide rivers. The comparison results showed that the velocity resolutions...
متن کاملProposed new signal for real-time stress monitoring: Combination of physiological measures
Human stress is a physiological tension that appears when a person responds to mental, emotional, or physical chal-lenges. Detecting human stress and developing methods to manage it, has become an important issue nowadays. Au-tomatic stress detection through physiological signals may be a useful method for solving this problem. In most of the earlier studies, long-term time window was considere...

These proposed self-powered, autonomously operating systems combines a number of microand nanotechnologies including biosensors, microfluidics, drug delivery, energy harvesters with living animal and will enable online monitoring of blood metabolites such as uric acid and beta-hydroxybutyrate in birds. We will measure the bird’s physiological status and store those data on flash for transmissio...
